For many, as they age, people end up with more time on their hands. Some choose to work part-time rather than completely retire. Those who retire, however, may find themselves with hours to fill. Remaining socially and physically active is important for retirement-age individuals. Not only can it help reduce the risk of health issues, but it also assists in avoiding loneliness and boredom. The older people get, the greater their chances of depression resulting from loneliness and boredom. Why not partake in one or more new hobbies? To give you a little bit of inspiration, we’ve made a list of some of the pastimes retirement age individuals may wish to partake in.
Take a Class
Classes are something that can combine a hobby with an increased level of socialization. You may wish, for now, to take a course online but numerous courses are offered by a number of organizations. Check locally to see what’s available if you’d like to get out and meet new people. Classes can include cooking, dancing, computer classes, gardening, decorating, learning foreign languages, painting, and more.
Community Groups
Once again, meet online if you wish, but get out and meet new people in your community when you feel comfortable. Throughout the country, groups that appeal to people 60 and over are meeting as you read this. Some of the groups following:
- Sports clubs
- Book groups/Religious studies
- Dance groups and choirs/choruses
- Coffee klatches
- Yoga groups
- Game playing
- Arts and crafts
Travel
Do you have a bucket list of destinations? When you feel comfortable traveling again, start checking off places on that list. Consider bus trips if you’d like to socialize with others or go alone (or with a significant other) if that’s what you prefer.
Pets
While pets aren’t considered a hobby, per se, they can be highly beneficial for older adults. A sense of purpose can be rekindled because a pet relies on its owner for everything. It may also lead to increased physical activity in the fresh air if the pet can be walked. Much needed companionship and unconditional love are offered by a pet.
Birdwatching
While this is something that can be done locally, it’s also an opportunity to travel if you’re interested in types of birds not found in your immediate vicinity. Pursuing this hobby is a great chance to get out of doors into the fresh air, commune with nature, and free your mind.
Other Hobbies for Retirement Age Adults
Other hobbies you may want to consider doing alone or with others while you’re enjoying your golden years:
- Model building
- Learn how to play a musical instrument
- Read books
- Cook/bake
- Jigsaw puzzles
- Participate in social media (Instagram, Twitter, Zoom, Facebook, etc.)
- Gaming (some favorite games in this age group consist of Super Mario, Age of Empires, Brain Training, Wii Sports, Bejeweled, and more)
- Gardening
- Physical activities like yoga, going to the gym, cycling, Nordic walking, hiking, etc.
Sports Activities
Naturally, running and other exercises must take into consideration the limitations faced by people in their 60s and over. This is not to say, however, that increased exercise and/or sports participation isn’t a healthy endeavor. It is.
If you can’t be a participant, consider being a spectator. Get a group of people together to go watch the games you prefer. It can make for a fun day.
