Even in some southern states, winter can be exhausting. Whether snow flies or not, the weather can become uncomfortably cool, or even cold. Of course, what’s cold for a Floridian is very pleasant for someone from Wisconsin. But if you’re uncomfortable, that’s what matters. Fortunately, spring is right around the corner and offers the perfect opportunity for fresh air and sunshine.
Spring for seniors, in particular, can be incredibly enjoyable. Why? The snow is finally gone and temperatures are getting warmer. Now you can go outside to get exercise, fresh air, and a change of scenery.
It’s important to keep moving, particularly as you age. Keeping those muscles, tendons, and bones moving is a great way to stay healthy. A healthier body means a happier outlook.
Here are some reasons why spring is possibly the most enjoyable time of year, particularly for retirement-age individuals.
The Stimulating Spring Setting Is Free of Charge
Until mother nature figures out a way to charge for nice weather, it shouldn’t cost you a cent to get outside and breathe in some fresh spring air. Enjoy the warm sunshine, remembering to apply sunscreen to any exposed skin.
The Healthy Out-Of-Doors
You can actually help improve your immune system, lower blood pressure, relax tense muscles, and relieve stress by spending time out-of-doors. To better your overall mood, release serotonin and increase endorphins through a brisk walk outside. Then sit under a tree and gaze at the clouds overhead.
Moving Is Easier
Sure, it’s not all that hard to get up out of your chair and walk around indoors. But the draw of gorgeous spring weather will make it much easier to actually want to get up and get moving. You may even want to move your daily exercise routine to the patio, porch, or courtyard.
Sunshine Is Healthy
You can get vitamin D from the sun. But make sure you’re always protected from the sun’s harmful rays. Sunglasses, high SPF sunscreen and lip balm, and the appropriate clothing should be used. Consider some kind of wide-brimmed breathable hat to keep the sun off your head and neck, too.
Temperatures Are Tolerable
Winter is too cold, and summer may be too hot for some, particularly in the golden years. In spring, you get “Goldilocks” weather – not too cold, not too hot, but just right.
Clean, Fresh Air
Though truly clean air may be a problem in your vicinity, depending on where you live, hopefully, you’ll be able to enjoy the fresh air of spring. Breathe deeply. Distinct benefits to one’s mental health can be enjoyed through deep breathing in the fresh spring air. You’ll feel full of energy, refreshed, and revitalized after inhaling that good, clean air.
Spring’s Sounds and Sights
Spring is a beautiful time of year, there’s no denying it. The grass is starting to turn green, flowers are blooming, and the birds are singing. During a daily walking excursion outside, you will be able to enjoy all of these, and more. Consider bringing some binoculars to get a better look at the birds and landscape.
