According to the City Council of Tampa, the district between Howard Avenue and Main Street is considered the commercial district of Tampa. It is also one of the oldest districts in the city and is known for its prominent and ornate architectural building designs. The two streets connect the commercial district to emerging urban developments from the suburbs of the West River through the Hillsborough River. As a central hub, it is valued as a multi-modal form of connection with the surrounding neighborhoods and is a symbol of Tampa’s rich heritage.
In recent years, the city has made plans to revitalize the commercial district, making the community and urban landscapes more interconnected for better living, further expanding on its multi-modal connection. Named the Neighborhood Commercial District Plan, there are plans to further grow the West Tampa and Main Street corridor, developing it into an increasingly vibrant and multi-use commercial center in the neighborhood.
Consulting the Local Community
The Neighborhood Commercial District Plan is a government coalition led by the City of Tampa. The project aims to bolster small businesses and elevate the working class, while creating a sense of community by using mixed-used developments to better connect various stakeholders, such as residents and business owners.
The project involves Tampa’s Department of Planning and Zoning, Department of Mobility, Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority, Metropolitan Planning Organization, Hillsborough County Planning Commission, and non-governmental bodies such as the University of South Florida’s School of Architecture, working together to bring this plan into action.
Furthermore, the project also consults with residents and business owners to contribute new ideas into the community planning process, helping address various issues. In addition to making spaces more affordable, the plan is committed to developing a safe area, encouraging businesses to boost revenue and profits.
Accessible Community Spaces
The vision behind the plan is to create a vibrant commercial district, representative of Tampa’s rich history and culture. In doing so, it also aims to make community spaces more accessible by developing urban landscapes that are more walkable, interconnected, and safe for people with disabilities.
The Neighborhood Commercial District Plan also aims to capitalize on the multi-modal connectivity of the city, positioning it as a central hub for socialization, community bonding, and convenient commerce. The plan addresses key ideas centered around upgrading the district’s appearance, safety and security issues, improving connectivity, and fostering community spirit.
