After a long winter that seems longer every year, almost everyone is ready for spring. It is a favorite season among many, and for good reason. It’s finally time to get outside and enjoy the bountiful flowers, chirping birds, fresh air, and more.
Naturally, you’ll want to lounge on your patio or porch and take in the gorgeous change from cold to warmer weather. But don’t forget to get busy in the garden, take a walk, and participate in other healthy outdoor activities during spring. Why? Your mental outlook, wellness, and health will all benefit if you get up, get moving, and deeply breathe in some fresh, spring air.
But what if you fall while you’re outside? Will you be safe? Enjoying the out-of-doors goes much better when you protect yourself. Here are some suggestions as to stay safe while enjoying outdoor activities this spring.
Get Suggested Shots to Protect Yourself
Make sure that all of your vaccinations and shots are up-to-date. It’s easy to scratch or cut yourself while enjoying the great out-of-doors. To ward off infection, make sure that, among the suggested routine shots and/or vaccinations, you include tetanus.
Particularly if you’re going to be gardening, you could put yourself at risk for skin irritations, cuts, and scrapes. While doing outside work, wear gloves and, if possible, a long sleeve shirt and pants. If you’re going to be using some kind of equipment/machinery, consider wearing appropriate ear protection and eye protection.
Bugs And Pests
It’s easy to get stung or bitten by ants, bees, mosquitoes, etc. when you venture outside in spring. You may wish to wear long pants and a long-sleeve shirt or use a safe bug repellent.
Are you allergic to bee stings? Be sure to bring your EpiPen outside with you, if so.
Paths And Walkways
Uneven walkways can present a fall hazard and put you at increased risk for injury. Don’t ruin your first venture outside this spring by falling and getting hurt. To navigate a rocky surface, consider bringing a walking stick and make sure you wear the appropriate shoes.
If a path doesn’t look safe, find another route.
Too Much Sun And Heat
For eye protection against the sun’s rays, wear a good pair of sunglasses. To prevent sunburn, use sunscreen on all exposed skin and wear a wide-brimmed hat. You might even want to use a lip balm with SPF protection. Make sure you stay hydrated, as well.
Though the heat is going to feel good after a cold winter, too much can be a problem. In addition to staying hydrated, make sure you don’t overheat. Wear a sun hat and loose clothing so that your skin can breathe. If you start feeling a little too warm, find a shady spot in which to relax for a while.
Note: Photosensitivity can be caused by some prescription drugs. Check the labels and/or with your physician if you’re unsure.
