Are you planning on doing anything special for St. Patrick’s Day? A costume party? Dance? Maybe a picnic? Cooking contest? Even if you’d like yours to be quiet, small, and intimate, there are some delicious traditional dishes you can enjoy in whatever setting you choose. You just have to Google “Popular Irish Dishes” to find page after page of suggestions for what to cook, bake, shop for, or create.
St. Patrick’s Day is a great excuse to enjoy good drinks, food, and friends. When it comes to traditional meals on St. Patrick’s Day, there are far too many from which to choose, so we’ve narrowed it down to three crowd favorites.
Homemade Irish Ice Cream Drink
You will combine the ingredients listed below by “pulsing” in a blender, until thoroughly mixed. Store the mixture in an airtight container and shake well before serving.
- Irish whiskey
- Vanilla extract
- Cocoa powder or chocolate extract
- Instant coffee powder
- Heavy cream
- Sweetened condensed milk
Either before or after dinner, you may opt for Irish coffee, rather than an ice cream drink. It’s a personal preference. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Slightly whipped, heavy cream
- Irish whiskey
- Brown sugar
- Freshly brewed coffee
- Some people like to substitute their favorite brand of Irish cream (Baileys, for example) for the whipped, heavy cream. But it’s still nice to spray or spoon some whipped cream on top.
Irish Nachos
While you may not consider this traditional, it’s a great way to enjoy nachos, which so many people are fond of, and give them an Irish spin. As an appetizer or, if you make enough nachos, as a meal, this is perfect. Rather than nacho chips, you will be using sliced potatoes (approximately 1/4 of an inch thick). You’ll toss them with the seasonings mentioned shortly. Once they’re baked, you can use any of the toppings listed here, or make up a few of your own. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Thinly sliced scallions
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- Avocados
- Bacon
- Shredded cheese
- Salt and pepper
- Garlic powder
- Thyme
- Rosemary
- Olive oil
- And as many potatoes, as you’ll need to feed your guests
Possibly Everyone’s Favorite – Corned Beef And Cabbage
Some people wait all year long just to partake in this meal. Follow the cooking instructions that come with your corned beef brisket or look some up online. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Small wedges of cabbage
- Red potatoes
- Carrots
- Celery stalks (optional)
- Pickling spice packet
- Corned beef brisket
