Summer is finally upon us and what other great way to spend it than explore Florida. If you and your grandkids are wildlife fanatics, Marco Island is the perfect place to visit. Plenty of nature reserves and wildlife sanctuaries are open for both adults and kids to explore. You will be surprised to see how many manatees, dolphins, bobcats and other animals call this island home.
Besides animals, Marco Island, FL is also home to plenty of mangrove forests, swamps and rookeries. Start planning your active vacation as activities such as birding, kayaking, biking and hiking are waiting! Start your wildlife viewing with these three natural areas:
Briggs Nature Center
Looking for a kid-friendly hike? Briggs Nature Center has a boardwalk and two short trails along Rookery Bay. Not too far from the center is Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. A home to river otters and different species of birds, the reserve also offers guided kayak tours, a learning center, festivals and other trails for kids to wander off to.
Florida Panther Wildlife Refuge
Despite being almost extinct 20 years ago, the Florida Panther has finally reentered the Florida food chain with the help of wildlife conservation. They can be difficult to find but a visit to the refuge is a fun way to start your search. Start making bets on who can spot the highest number of panthers!
Big Cypress Preserve
Visit the Big Cypress Preserve for scenic views of a collection of estuaries and swamps. The Oasis Visitor Center or Big Cypress Swamp Welcome Center has the information you need for trails, ranger-led tours and commercial tours if you wish to engage in paddling, boat tours or informational hikes. If you’re feeling extra active, participate in a Triathlon by the reserve!
Otter Mound Preserve
Located in Indian Hills, take a walk at Otter Mound Preserve if you would like to take things slow. There is plenty for you to take a break as you hike through the forest and take in the essence of mother nature. Pottery pieces have been found in the area and many believe that they are 3,000 years old! This means that you would be walking on land that ancient peoples once called home.
