Starting to grow flowers and plants from seeds may feel like a huge challenge. However, if you choose the right types of plants, you will find that it is a manageable task. In some cases, the seeds will start to sprout and grow from the soil where you sow them. Some plants will thrive in cooler temperatures so they are great for the spring garden. Read on to learn more about the best flowers for spring gardeners!
Bachelor’s Buttons
If you want to have blue flowers in your beautiful garden, this is the one for you. Check out the bachelor’s buttons, also known as cornflowers. You can sow seeds directly in the ground after the last frost date in your area. If the winter season is mild, you can even sow the seeds in the fall. Cover the seeds with 1/8 inch of soil. Then, thin them when the seedlings are about 4 inches tall. Grow your flowers in partial shade to full sun.
Sweet Peas
You can start growing sweet peas indoors four weeks before the last frost date. When spring is short, this early start will give them time to bloom before it becomes too hot. The gardeners in cooler climates are able to directly sow sweet peas in the ground. It also helps to soak the seeds overnight before you plant them. Cover the seeds with one and a half inches of soil. Grow the flowers in full sun for the best results.
Calendula
Sow the seeds in the ground or in containers when the soil can be worked in spring. Then, cover with about a quarter inch of soil. Thin the seedlings to 12 inches apart. Try sowing the seeds in fall for spring blooms if the climate is hot.
Larkspur
It is good to sow larkspur in mid-fall as the seeds require cool soil temperatures for them to germinate. Try to get the seeds into the ground before November arrives. In other places, you can sow seeds after the last frost date. Then, cover with a quarter inch of soil. Thin the seedlings when they reach about 4 inches tall. Do note that larkspur likes to have consistent moisture. Grow the flowers in partial shade to full sun.
Nasturtium
These dainty flowers are edible and easy to grow. It is best to directly sow them in containers and flower beds after the frost has passed. For the best growth, the soil should not be too fertile. Cover with about half inches of soil and grow them in full sun. Be sure not to overwater.
