To convince loved ones to wear diapers, you might have to do some fast-talking. At best, it will likely be an uphill battle. Unfortunately, some level of incontinence often goes along with aging. When incontinence gets too bad, the best option for your loved one may well be adult diapers. Sadly, the term “adult diapers” alone is enough to put anyone off! (More on this in a moment.) How do you convince them this is a good move?
If your mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, or other aging loved one is experiencing incontinence, assure them that they are not alone. In fact, incontinence affects approximately 33 million people in America today. This may or may not truly offer comfort, but it’s a fact.
Let’s look at some ways you may be able to convince your loved one to wear an “adult diaper.”
First and Foremost – Change Your Vocabulary
As mentioned earlier, no adult wants to hear something they put on their body referred to as a “diaper.” This brings up images of bulky, huge, baby accessories. Adult incontinence underwear and/or pads are far from diapers – so don’t call them that.
Try “adult briefs”, “disposable underwear”, or some imaginative term you feel comfortable using.
Talk to Your Loved One’s Physician
Sometimes, when the advice comes from a physician your loved one respects, it can go a long way. If their doctor recommends they wear some type of incontinence clothing article, they may be more likely to at least give it a try.
Gently Notify Them of An Odor
Chances are, your loved one has no desire to look or smell unclean. Don’t be crass, but gently inform them that, due to their incontinence, they tend to smell like urine. Particularly if they go out in public, they are not going to want this to be the case. Let them know that they won’t smell as bad if they wear incontinence pads or pull-ups.
Again, however, we can’t stress enough how delicately this must be handled. You’re not trying to hurt anyone’s feelings here. There’s no sense in making someone feel bad about themselves. Nothing positive can be accomplished that way.
Have Some Samples
If you’re referring to pull-ups, incontinence pads, or what have you, make sure you have some ready so you can show your loved one what you’re talking about. Many of today’s adult pull-ups are very thin, and may not be detectable under clothing. Your loved one can get away with just an incontinence pad. Of course, you’ll want to make sure that spares are always available when needed.
For any myths or untruths, you see on the Internet or hear your loved one refer to, dispel their doubts. Have your facts ready so you can back up your statements and disprove nasty myths.
