The Museum displays archives of the textile, tobacco, and railroad industries, town enterprises, community churches, and rural farms, featuring a portion of the distinguished history of community living. The building was constructed in 1906 as the leading Bank within Chase City. Following several mergers, a separate bank building was erected. The building was eventually vacated in 1968. The beginning of Dr. Davis’ medical practice in 1972 involved the old bank transitioning to medical clinics. The practice expanded, and ultimately, new owners moved in. They moved the practice into Charlotte Court House. Yet again, the building was vacated and remained empty until the launching of the present museum.
From 1853, Drakes Branch gained a name for being a massive dark-fired tobacco sales venue. Extending over a century, eight warehouses and multiple preserves catered to the farmers of Southside Virginia up to the Great Depression of the 1930s. Wall Street rose. The tobacco warehouses sank. The Drakes Branch Museum is located within the old State Bank of Charlotte County on Main Street. The bank was constructed in 1906. A newly built train station took over the one damaged in a blaze in the Wilson-Kautz Raid in 1864. The museum displays all the schools, the industries, the churches, the railroads, and the farms that thrived in the history of the distinguished rural town.
