In addition to keeping your loved ones physically fit, you should pay special attention to their mental and emotional health. To care for their emotional well-being, they can engage in activities or events that stimulate their minds and have social interactions. Many people have found that crafting is a great way of releasing emotional distress and provides a source of comfort to some. Crafting for your loved ones is a good emotional outlet to express your feelings through the work of your own hands. It keeps the mind active in a fun and engaging way. Although these crafts do take more effort, the sense of achievement will be immense! Here are some crafting ideas for seniors to try out.
Hedgehog Painted Rocks
These hedgehog-painted rocks are so adorable! This activity can be done with young children as well.
What you will need:
- Stones (any of those you have come across in your walks)
- Acrylic paints (any color you like your hedgehog to be!)
- Paintbrushes or sponges
- Black permanent marker
Firstly, remember to clean the stones to remove any dust or dirt. Apply the first coat of paint all over the body and let it dry for about 10 minutes. Afterwhich, apply the next coat of a different color over it, this will be the color of the body. If you would like to add some texture to the hedgehog to make it look fuzzy, you can use a sponge to apply the paint instead of a paintbrush. Lastly, give your hedgehog a nose, a pair of eyes, and some spikes by drawing it on with a black marker.
Pointillism
There are many different painting techniques that are all very unique especially pointillism! It is so fun and easy to do! Georges Seurat was an artist in Paris, France that lived in the late 19th century who developed this unique style of pointillism. Without mixing colors together, he tried making small dots of color next to each other which created this illusion to the eye that the colors are all mixed to form a complete picture.
Homemade Air-dry Clay
Making cute clay figurines or charms is a great gift to any friend or family!
What you need:
- 1 cup of cornstarch
- 2 cups of baking Soda
- 1 1/4 cups of water
Place all these ingredients together in a pot and heat under medium heat. Remember to store the pot constantly until it thickens and has the consistency of mashed potatoes! Let the mixture cool down then knead the clay till it is no longer crumbly but smooth. You can now make any cute creations you like! To preserve the excess clay, do wrap it in a damp towel to keep it from getting dry. Your creations will take a few days to harden and firm up.
