If you are unsure whether a business provides discounts to Seniors, always be sure to ask before purchasing! You can often receive discounts of 5 percent or more, but you first have to ask!
Below is a list of places to consider in receiving discounts, so that you can not only enjoy your golden years, but also make the most out of your money.
Stay in your best shape with a Gym Membership
More than 65 Medicare Health Plans participate in the Healthways Silver Sneakers Fitness Program, an insurance benefit that provides gym memberships free of charge. Seniors participating in the Silvers Sneakers membership can choose from 13,000 gym locations nationwide. Local gyms often provide senior discounts as well, so be sure to check them out. Bally Total Fitness provides $100 off memberships to Seniors ages 62 and older.
Look your best with a New Do
Check with your local salon or barbershop about Senior discounts on haircuts. Great Clips and Super Cuts often offer discounts for Seniors 60 years and older, but vary by location since these chains are actually individual franchises.
Travel in style
If you are considering a trip or need local transportation, Seniors have many options for discount travel.
Car Rentals- AARP members receive a variety of discounts from 25 to 50 percent on car rental services including National Rent-A-Car, Alamo Car Rental, Dollar-Rent-A-Car, Avis, Alamo, Budget Rental Cars and Enterprise Rent-A-Car.
Airlines– United Airlines, Southwest Airlines and U.S. Airways all offer discounts to Seniors ages 65 and older. Before booking with one of these airlines, make sure to call them first in order to receive your discount.
Cruise Lines- Many cruise lines such as Carnival, Celebrity and Royal Caribbean give discounts to Seniors ages 55 and older. Just like airline discounts, make sure to call first to ask about senior discounts before booking.
Bus and Train Travel- Greyhound Buses provide a 15 percent discount to travelers ages 62 and older, while Trailways Transportation Buses also provide various discounts for travelers 50 and older. Passengers ages 62 and older receive a 15 percent discount on Amtrak trains.
Hotels
There are a variety of discount options for Hotels depending on your preferred accommodation. If booked 72 hours in advance, Hampton Inn & Suites often offer a 40 percent discount for Seniors ages 65 and older.
Cambria Suites, Clarion Motels, Comfort Inn, Comfort Suites, Econo Lodge, Mainstay Suites, Quality Inn, Rodeway Inn and Sleep Inn all offer between 20 to 40 percent discounts for Seniors ages 60 years and older.
Holiday Inn, Hyatt Hotels, and Marriot Hotels all offer between 20 to 50 percent discounts for Seniors ages 62 and older.
Motel 6 accommodates Seniors 60 years and older for FREE on Sunday nights.
On the higher end, Adults ages 55 and older that book the presidential suite in the Waldorf Astoria in New York City receive $5,000 off the nightly rate.
Shop for Groceries or Eat Out
Many grocery stores have senior discounts. Some discounts vary according to location, date and age of the adult, so check with your local grocery stores first to get the correct information. Publix offers a 15 percent discount every Wednesday to Seniors ages 55 and older. The Plant Shed and American Discount Stores offer discounts to the youngest seniors, ages 50 years and older. Other grocery stores offering Senior Discounts include Albertson’s, Compare Foods Supermarkets, Gristedes, Harris Teeter, Hy-Vee, Kroger, Morton Williams and Great Valu Food Store.
There are many restaurant chains that offer eating discounts as well. Any Seniors that have a sweet tooth? Ben and Jerry’s and participating Mrs. Fields locations offer a 10 percent discount to adults 60 years and older, while Dunkin’ Donuts gives a 10 percent discount or FREE coffee to adults ages 55 and older. Applebees, Fuddruckers, Chili’s, IHOP, Golden Corral, Boston Market, Denny’s and more restaurants all offer various Senior discounts as well.
