For retirement age adults, what do you suppose is one of the most dangerous rooms in the house? Answer: the bathroom. Not only is it dangerous, for adults suffering from memory-related conditions, it can also be a confusing environment, as well.
For numerous families throughout the nation, difficult situations are frequently caused due to bathroom falls and slips. Many safety issues can arise. Here, we’re going to make an examination of the restroom your aging loved one may be using, and how to make it an elder friendly bathroom.
The Sink
- To reduce scalding, make sure there’s an adjustable hot limit safety stop on the faucet.
- Many older adults find the newer ADA compliant faucets easier to use. It can be difficult to turn and/or grip standard faucet handles if an individual suffers from arthritis.
- Always make sure that hot and cold faucets are clearly marked, and/or use color-coding.
The Toilet
- To summon help right away, very near the toilet, keep a medical alert button.
- Standard toilet height may not be appropriate. Consider purchasing a taller version, a raised toilet seat, and/or installing arms/handles on the toilet.
The Floor
- Make sure the bathmats don’t create a tripping hazard and that they are slip-proof.
- On the bathtub or shower floor, consider installing non-skid mats or tape.
The Bathtub
- Promote self-care and independence with a shower or bathtub system with a built-in seat.
- Use a no-scald regulator or no-scald faucet but, by all means, make sure that water heater temperatures are 120°F or less to prevent scalding.
- Particularly if your loved one prefers not to use the tub, consider replacing it with a walk-in shower.
The Shower
- Talk to your loved one about wearing a waterproof medical alert button while in the shower.
- Consider the use of a shower chair and a flexible handheld shower wand.
- Install sturdy grab bars.
“Stuff” In General
There can be a lot of “stuff” in a bathroom. All of it needs to be considered.
- Reduce uncomfortable glare by staying away from high-gloss tiles and paint. To increase visual perception, choose floor and wall patterns and colors that contrast.
- Attach a small cabinet to the wall above the toilet or use the toilet tank top for appropriate items.
- To reduce clutter, and help give the illusion of a larger space, hide cleaning supplies, bath products, towels, and hairdryers in a vanity that offers adequate storage space.
- To clear the way for wheelchairs and reduce falls and slips, neatly stowaway grooming accessories, bathing items, and more – but make sure they’re still accessible.
