Self-care is an important topic. It’s common for people to post photos of vacations and bubble baths on social media nowadays. While these leisure activities are relaxing, self-care is more than just taking a picture of your photo-worthy leisure. It is more about improving your mental health through the practice of regular activities. Here are some ways to enhance self-care for loved ones or yourself.
Exercise
Staying fit is essential for not just the body but the mind as well! During aerobic exercise, our brain will release endorphins which are the body’s natural hormones that make you feel good. While this phenomenon is commonly known as “runner’s high”, you don’t have to actually be running to enjoy this mental health benefit. Whether it is walking, jogging, swimming, dancing, yoga, or even gardening, it has been scientifically proven to work regardless. But the intensity matters here and differs for each activity. The more physically demanding or challenging the activity is, the more endorphins are released. Your loved one should pick an exercise that can get the heart racing or blood pumping adequately but never overexert beyond the limits. Such physical activities can aid in the reduction of depression and anxiety levels. Other than that, exercise is also evident in allaying social withdrawal and low self-esteem issues.
Hydrate
Drinking water is probably a surprise on this list but it’s an important one. Keeping hydrated helps to regulate our bodies and systems. Likewise, our brains also need water to function properly and the lack of it can cause headaches or even affect our mood. A study researched that drinking less than two glasses of water a day increases the likelihood of depression by 54% in women and 73% in men.
Go Outside
Going outdoors for some sun and fresh air can benefit your loved ones or your health. Studies have shown that residents living near to nature enjoy health benefits such as reduced levels of the stress hormone cortisol, heart rate, and blood pressure. But you don’t need to live in a rural area to immerse yourself in nature. Do encourage your loved ones to take a stroll at the nearby park or garden to help improve their mental health.
Socialize
Humans by nature are social creatures, so it is important for your aging loved ones to spend more time with family and friends. This can positively impact mental health as social interaction can allow the brain to release oxytocin, which is a hormone that lowers stress and cortisol levels.
As seniors are at risk for social isolation, staying in contact with their loved ones is critical. When social and physical contact is not possible, social media can be an excellent alternative to help keep in touch with family and friends. Using social media is also shown to reduce the risk of depression for older adults living with chronic pain.
