Do you live in a retirement community? If so, does it have a back patio, front patio, or some other common outdoor area? This is the perfect place to schedule regularly held outdoor games. So the space can be enjoyed by one and all, whenever the weather permits, encourage your friends to join you in some patio activities. What do we mean by patio activities? Glad you asked.
Your retirement community’s patio can offer summer events and activities consisting of, at the very least, the following game ideas. Remember that if the sun is too hot, some type of portable gazebo/awning is a great addition to any patio area. Your community may even consider building a permanent shelter for such occasions.
Bingo (Of Course)
You had to know that bingo was going to be on the list. Even though it’s usually considered an indoor activity, there is no reason it can’t take place outside. If the sound doesn’t carry as well as it does indoors (for announcing numbers), a small, inexpensive PA system could come in handy. It can also be used for a number of other indoor and outdoor activities, so it’s a good investment.
Ladder Toss
You may have seen a version of this at a picnic, in your grandchild’s backyard, etc. Around the colored rungs of a “ladder”, bolo balls are wrapped to earn points. They are tossed at the ladders from a considerable distance, but you can shorten it if need be. For patio play, this is the perfect game.
Giant Dice Roll
Think of the doubles dice game and oversize it. Community residents can roll large, inflatable dice (use an air pump to inflate them) on the patio or in a grassy area. In under a minute, how many times will each resident be able to roll doubles? Every time they do, they earn points.
Giant Jenga or Super Tumbling Timbers
If you oversized the components used in Jenga, you’d have Super Tumbling Timbers. It’s more conducive to an outdoor area because the pieces are large. It’s the classic stacking game but with a whole new dimension.
Skee Ball
You may have played a more technically animated version of this in an arcade, or seen your grandkids play it. On your back patio, you place these portable skee ball setups (two). You can play one person against one person, in couples, or in teams.
