Chair yoga has gained fans throughout the years, all over the world. For older adults and others with health complications, this modified version of yoga is absolutely perfect. You can sit and be fit, and actually enjoy yourself while doing it.
To your daily routine, whether you’re sitting on a long flight during travel or for hours at your desk, you can introduce exercise and increased circulation with the movements which come courtesy of chair yoga.
The benefits of chair yoga provide your body and mind with a happier mental state, relief of stiffness and cramps, improved flexibility, and more.
Chair Yoga Is for Everyone
Chair yoga can be enjoyed by everyone, but for people with conditions like multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic pain, and other conditions, it’s the ideal form of exercise. If you have trouble moving through the down and up motions of traditional yoga – be it from increasing age or something else – you can benefit greatly from chair yoga because it allows you to be stabilized. Improve your mental state, encourage weight loss, and enjoy increased flexibility once again. All of these have been newly discovered by people who thought they could never exercise.
As We Age
As our bodies grow older, degeneration progresses in four phases. To slow the process down, exercise should be a major intervention. The amount of activity you can participate in is severely limited if a joint or joints can’t move through a range considered normal. To promote stretching, practice chair yoga biweekly or, if you can, weekly. This can help you with chores or activities including everything from grocery shopping to housecleaning.
Extended Side Angle (For a Chair)
Plant both your feet on the floor and choose the side you want to start with. Over your knees, bend your upper body. On the floor, place your hands. Put them firmly on your calf if you can’t touch the floor. Twist your body and extend toward the sky with your hand. As you inhale, this opens up your chest. For 2 to 3 counts, hold that position then exhale as you bring your arms down to the center again. Repeat on the other side.
Modified Cat-Cow Stretch (For a Chair)
Place your hands on your knees and your feet firmly planted on the ground while sitting. As you inhale, arch your spine (for the cat position) while rolling your shoulders down and back toward your back. Drop your chin while exhaling for the cow position. Leading your head and shoulders forward, begin to round your spine area. Before starting additional poses, this is a good yoga stretch.
