Soon, a new season will be upon us. Animals will be frolicking, flowers will start blooming, and the weather will be getting warm. So you and your loved one can thoroughly enjoy a fun and safe season, we’re going to look at some age-appropriate activities to do in the spring, where retirees are concerned. When all else fails, consider taking a day trip somewhere new, exciting, and fun.
Help support your aging loved one’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being by participating with them, together, in the activities discussed below. It will feel good, after a long winter, to get back out into the fresh air and sunshine. Take full advantage of this opportunity to spend some quality time with your retired loved one.
If walking considerable distances is a problem for your loved one, keep your activities close to home. If they live in a retirement community, there may be some beautiful courtyards or grounds upon which to celebrate spring in style.
Outdoor Activities with the Grandkids
Grandma and Grandpa, more times than not, can’t wait to spend time with their grandchildren. With the weather getting warmer, take the visit outdoors. Consider heading to the local park with a table cloth/blanket, some favorite snacks, and bottled water. If your kids participate in sports, maybe grandma or grandpa would like to see one of their games.
Make sure you bring your camera (or use your phone) to record all the smiles, fun, and laughter that will abound.
Indoor/Outdoor Games
Games can be fun for families and friends, young and old, and people of mixed interests. There are many outdoor games that can be played safely and easily (croquet, bocce ball, etc.). Since the weather can be unpredictable in spring, have a few indoor games handy that can be played by a window, for an outdoor feel. Some of these can include Scrabble, cards, checkers or chess, and more.
Physical Activities Keep You Young
With the weather getting warmer, one of the most important things you can do with your loved ones is to get them outside. Even a short walk is far better than sitting alone in their room on the couch watching TV. Pick a destination that’s close and increase the length of your walk every now and then. Make sure, however, that you don’t walk too far in one direction so that it’s difficult to get back to home base.
Grilling
Some retirement communities have grills outside on a patio or in a courtyard. Others refrain from offering or encouraging this type of amenity or activity. If outdoor cooking is not available where your loved one resides, have them over for a family or neighborhood cookout.
