When the weather outside is frightful, it’s time to turn to indoor exercises for healthy aging. Just because you can’t go outside doesn’t mean you can’t stay active. Even if it’s just for 15 minutes a day, getting up off that couch or chair and moving around is highly beneficial. Particularly where age 65 individuals and up are concerned, it’s crucial to stay as active as possible. A healthier body is a happier body, and physical exercise is even beneficial for your brain.
Compared to those who don’t exercise, older adults who do exercise spend 25% less time being injured and disabled. There are numerous benefits to physical activity including the following:
- Enhanced balance
- Improved flexibility
- Increased mobility
- Reduced impact of illness
- Lessen the chance of Alzheimer’s and other memory-related conditions
- Lose weight (or maintain a healthy weight)
- Add years to your life
- Boost your mood
That’s just for starters. Be sure, however, before you start any kind of physical regimen that you check with your physician so you won’t overdo it and can be assured your body can handle it. Always make sure that, when you exercise, you drink plenty of water, wear the right shoes, and, whenever possible, exercise with a friend so you can both keep an eye on each other.
Ready to get moving? Here’s how you can do it.
Exercising in The Home
Shortly, we’ll mention other places to exercise, but there are plenty of physical fitness regimes that can be accomplished in your home environment. Here are some of them:
- Strength exercises
- Step exercises
- Balance exercises
- Fitness apps
- Exercise videos
Swimming
One of the most incredible exercises in which you can take part in is swimming. YMCAs frequently have pools the public can use. You may be lucky enough to have access to a pool where you live, in fact. Never pass up the opportunity to swim if you don’t have to. It exercises every muscle in the body.
Is swimming too boring? How about some water aerobics? For some added socialization, find some friends to do it with.
Stretching Exercises
Even if you don’t feel like doing high-impact exercises or cardio workouts, the benefits of simple stretching are many. Naturally, before and after you exercise you will want to stretch, as well. But some people simply do half an hour of good stretching just to get their body up, moving, and to stimulate their muscles. Besides all of that, it feels good!
Walking
This is great exercise and can be done both indoors and outdoors. If you only attempt a brisk walk for 15 minutes a day, your body will benefit. When you can, increase that to half an hour a day and you’ve got yourself a nice little exercise regime.
