It is often said that we are what we eat. Food not only gives us the energy to do everyday activities but it also has an effect on our health. We primarily get nutrients from what we eat and when we fail to get some of these nutrients, we may expose our bodies to diseases and serious medical conditions. This is why it is important for us to help our loved ones eat better and also eat the right kind of food and drinks.
Here are some suggestions on how we can make that happen.
Increase Fluids
Fluids, and especially water, are critical to health. The truth of the matter however is that we tend to drink less water as the years advance. This could be due to the fact that on average, physical activity reduces and this, in turn, means that we do not get as thirsty as we used to. Scientists have also noted that our sense of thirst reduces with the years as well. However, the need for water remains just as critical as ever. This is why it is a good idea to encourage your loved ones to drink water throughout the day even if they do not feel thirsty. Other important liquids to take include fat-free milk which is rich in calcium, and natural fruit juices among others.
Vary Meals
Different kinds of food items have different nutrients. This is why your loved one should consume as many different kinds of food as possible. When varying meals, try to include a balance of the three critical food groups namely proteins, carbs, and vitamins. Since some of these come from animal and plant sources, consider varying these sources too if there are no other factors to consider (such as your loved one may be vegetarian). As much as possible, try to use fresh ingredients rather than processed ones as the industrial process may destroy important nutrients. Space allowing, having a small garden can help you grow some of these vegetables that you can then use to prepare meals.
Meal Planning
Related to the above point is the aspect of planning your meals for the whole week. Typically, planning helps you to ensure that you have all the ingredients that you need in advance and so you can easily adhere to your meal plan. It also reduces the likelihood that you will eat the wrong kind of food, especially if you are not well prepared to make the food you want. If you are pressed for time, you could make different meals in advance and then freeze them until you need to consume them.
Reduce Salt Seasoning
You may have noticed the tendency to increase our salt intake over a period of time. This is due to the fact that our sense of taste becomes less sensitive over the years. Taking in large amounts of salt is however very unhealthy and could lead to blood pressure complications. You should monitor your salt intake and consider using healthy spices such as garlic to add taste to your food.
