This means having enough time to frequently check whether smoke detectors are working or not. In line with that, you must see to it that spare batteries are also available. Better yet, change spare batteries when you know they are running low already.
You must also take the time to check kitchen supplies, noting that they are stored properly. It is preferred that heavy items must be stored within your loved ones’ reach so they won’t need to reach overhead in case they need those supplies later on.
There Must be Safe Access
It is important to have safe access to tools in the kitchen. A step stool will be a reliable tool when reaching out for kitchen items. The stool must be non-slip to prevent falls or other forms of accidents. Make sure that they will not cause any untoward incidents later. The fire extinguisher must also be in easy reach for your loved ones, and so must be an updated fire escape plan.
Think of Fire Safety
Never leave your cooking unattended. You must make sure that fire hazards are not located near your kitchen appliances. Examples are paper products and towels. Never wear loose clothing as this may also catch fire. Avoid using extension cords which are known to be fire hazards, and at the same time, may be the cause for tripping. Keep appliances away from water too.
Clean Up Spills
Avoid making spills in the kitchen and then leaving them unattended later. Once you have spilled something, it is your duty to clean up after. Automatic plugs will help prevent fires, just in case your loved ones forget to turn off any kitchen appliance after using them. Food thermometers are also helpful in making sure that food is cooked to the right temperature. Place non-slip floor mats on the kitchen floor too.
If your loved one moves into a retirement community, make sure that your choice offers amenities for them to enjoy. Many of these communities have kitchens included in the apartment homes and some serve restaurant-style meals for residents too. All your loved ones need to do is sit down and enjoy the meal served to them.
