These days, with the advancement of technology accelerating rapidly, many new gadgets seem as if they came right out of a Jetson’s cartoon! As futuristic and out of this world as certain gadgets appear, they can be quite useful in keeping Senior Citizens safe, communicating important information and improving overall quality of life. Today, technology for the aging is one of the fastest growing industries, which is expected to be a $30 billion market in 2017. It’s no surprise that technology for the aging market will continue to increase, as it prolongs independent living, provides Seniors with greater freedom and ease, and gives loved ones peace of mind.
Currently, there are a variety of Personal Emergency Response System gadgets on the market that can alert loved ones, caregivers and emergency professionals to potential safety or emergency concerns. Seniors can also access this system, often pushing an emergency or help button on the device. Some of these systems can be attached to objects in the home, while others can be worn as a pendant or wristwatch.
There are a variety of personal emergency sensors that are used to keep track of a Senior Citizen’s routines and activities. Sensors can now be connected to smart phones so that caregivers and loved ones can check in periodically on the Senior to ensure all is well, and also be alerted if any unusual activity arises. This unusual activity may include:
- If a Senior has not done a certain task by a certain time
- If a Senior leaves the house without locking the door
- If a Senior falls down
- If a Senior does not take his or her medicine
- If a Senior forgets to unplug electrical devices
These Personal Emergency Response Systems below are slightly different from each other, but have all been given great reviews.
Great Call: Great Call is a company that specializes in cell phones for Seniors. These phones contain personal emergency response systems that keep Seniors safe and healthy. The 5star Medical Alert Button puts Seniors immediately in touch with Medical Alert Agents. These devices can be connected to smart phones so that loved ones and caregivers can keep track of any unusual activity. The phones also contain special features, such as big buttons, large and easy to read numbers, a completely waterproof covering, a battery that last twenty-five days and a powerful speaker to hear conversations clearly.
BeClose: The makers of BeClose promote this sensor as a discreet system that is placed in the home, requiring no drilling, running wires through the home or even internet connection, as it runs on the cellular network. These multiple sensors can be attached to various objects in the home, and alerts caregivers to areas of concern.
Lively: This sensor is worn as a smart watch, so that caregivers can check on Seniors even when they go on outings outside the home. When the Help Button is pushed on this device, the Lively team is contacted and first tries to reach the Senior by phone and then responds appropriately contacting necessary emergency contacts and emergency services. The watch bands can also be switched or replaced with any 20mm band.
Evermind: In addition to being a safety sensor that signals whether or not a Senior is following their normal routine, Evermind can also be used as a disease and asset management program. This includes the monitoring of medical devices.
MobileHelp: With MobileHelp, Seniors have their choice of portable sensor devices (including neck pendants, wrist watches, or general mobile devices) that can be taken anywhere to be used in case of an emergency. When the help button is pushed, Mobile Help Emergency Operators are contacted, and assess the situation. Operators then contact emergency assistance, as well as appropriate family, caregivers and other contacts. Mobile Help uses GPS technology to allow Operators to find the exact location of a Senior quickly, so that the closest responders can be dispatched. Family members can also track their loved ones location using the MobileHelp Caregiver Tools online.
