At Discovery Village At Dominion, our mission is for your loved ones to live an active lifestyle through our safe, curated exercise programs. However, they are highly susceptible to exercise injuries and if it happens, they may require a longer recovery process. Hence, we aim to promote injury prevention among them as they pursue a dynamic life in their golden years. Here is an exercise injury prevention guide for them.
Injury Prevention Through Warm-Up
Injury prevention begins even before the exercise begins! Studies have shown that 15 minutes of warm-up can prevent muscular injury. Warming up gently activates the body to supply blood and oxygen to muscles, allowing them to be more flexible for movement. Without warm-up, they are more susceptible to injury due to stiff muscles. A good warm-up exercise includes a five-minute brisk walk. However, over-warming up can also happen so ensure that stretches are not held for more than 15 to 30 seconds.
Embrace Variety for Injury Prevention
Variety is great for injury prevention as it prevents the over-exertion of a particular muscle group. By crafting a holistic exercise regime with different workout exercises, it ensures that all muscle groups are used while preventing over-straining of a particular muscle. Variety also makes the exercise more fun and less monotonous! Incorporating different workouts and exercise tools like kettlebells are great to incorporate an element of surprise while promoting injury prevention.
Injury Prevention with A Conducive Environment
At Discovery Village At Dominion, our exercise premises are free of clutter and highly conducive for exercising, hence ensuring injury prevention. Exercise veterans have also advised a space of at least four feet by 6 feet for a safe exercising environment. It’s crucial to ensure the flooring is made of non-slip material to prevent falls from happening.
A conducive environment also includes using appropriate exercise gear too! Suitable exercise gear ensures injury prevention, and this includes proper running shoes suited for running, comfortable exercising clothes, and so on.
Injury Prevention with Good Exercise Form
At Discovery Village At Dominion, we promote the use of good exercise techniques instead of merely pushing for higher reps. An improper form may lead to a higher incidence of exercise injury. Our physical therapists are available to ensure injury prevention by reminding our residents of good posture during workout sessions. While it’s fun to challenge yourself, they should not push themselves too hard either!
Physical Therapists Ensure Injury Prevention
Our physical therapists are well-trained to help our residents improve their postures and keep their balance through proprietary techniques, known as passive and active techniques. Some of their passive techniques include incorporating heat or ice pack treatment. Heat pack treatment ensures they are sufficiently warmed up before exercise while ice pack treatment helps them to cool down after their exercises. These techniques help to promote regular body functioning before and after exercises and ensure injury prevention.
Also, our physical therapists are our residents’ greatest cheerleaders by challenging them to be a healthier, better version of themselves in a safe and encouraging environment. They are also able to provide competent advice that’s personalized to each of their personal physical needs, ensuring every exercise program is tailored to bring out their individual best.
