Though everyone should try, as much as they can, to eat healthy and nutritious foods throughout their lifetime, as you age, it becomes even more important. The nutrition needed in your golden years, however, can differ somewhat from what you needed when you were young. It’s important to enjoy your meals, so in addition to them being nutritious, they should be as delicious as possible. No one’s going to eat something they don’t like the taste of, for the most part.
Other than getting the nutrients that you need from your meals, here are some necessary nutritional supplements in your 50s that you should include in your daily diet.
What’s a Supplement?
Substances you can use to lower your risk of health problems, or are used to add nutrients to your diet, are referred to as dietary supplements. With the right kind, you may be able to head off osteoporosis, arthritis, and more. For the most part, many extracts, liquids, powders, gel tabs, pills, and capsules are common types of nutritional supplement forms. They can contain enzymes, fiber, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and more.
Now let’s get to those nutritional supplements for those 50 years of age and above.
Probiotics
A group of bacteria called probiotics can be found mostly in dairy products. It is a critical nutrition aspect. It’s a particularly good idea to take a probiotic supplement if you have a dairy allergy.
Fish Oil
As a preventative measure for practically everything under the sun, and used to treat numerous ailments, fish oil can be extremely beneficial. This is due, in part, to the omega-3 fatty acids contained within fish oil supplements. It can also reduce triglycerides and help treat skin dryness.
It may even offer assistance to those with depression, Alzheimer’s Disease, and prostate cancer.
Vitamin B12 and B6
Red blood cells (RBCs) are formed courtesy of B6. It can be found in chicken breasts, fortified cereals, potatoes, and bananas.
To keep your red blood cells and nerves healthy, vitamin B12 is also essential.
Glucosamine and Chondroitin
These must be manufactured by our bodies because natural food does not contain them. But healthy cartilage can depend on both. To slow the progression of osteoarthritis and reduce joint pain, take these two supplements.
Vitamin D
Some people might get the vitamin D they need from being out in the sun. If not, use a vitamin D supplement or add fatty fish, milk products and de-fortified milk, and D-fortified cereals to your diet.
Calcium
No matter your age, your bones will be healthier with vitamin D and calcium. Find calcium in some breakfast cereals, soft-boned fish, milk products, and green leafy vegetables.
Note: You may wish to check with your personal physician before starting any type of dietary supplement program.
