Spring is an excellent time to check winter damage, repair equipment, fill up holes in the landscape, tend to your grass, do necessary trimming, and create new garden beds.
Even with a winter frost in the air, there are plenty of jobs to get started on now if you want to have your garden ready for a party by the time the temperature rises.
We’ve put up a guide for spring gardening to help you reacquaint yourself with your outdoor environment.
Refresh the Lawn
If you have grass, spring is a crucial time to pay attention to it. Send the mower and leaf blower in for servicing, or sharpen the mower blades yourselves with the proper tools. Refill the oil in your mower, replace the spark plugs, and lubricate any moving components as needed. Before mowing, clear the lawn of winter debris and inspect for spots that require reseeding.
Prepare New Beds
It is very feasible to prepare a new planting bed where none previously existed. The first essential thing is to loosen the soil, which adds oxygen and relieves compaction, and then add additives, such as compost, to kickstart the production of rich, living soil. Remove sod, weeds, and trash from the planting area as soon as the soil is ready. Distribute a four-inch layer of well-rotted manure or compost and any fertilizers over the soil. Using a spading fork, cultivate it to a depth of 10 to 12 inches. Before planting, do remember to level it out with a rake.
Plant Container-Grown Plants
Transplant container garden plants at any time during the planting season, except during the midsummer’s heat, and be sure to carefully hydrate them before and after they go in the soil. Seeds of cool-season flowers such as poppies, calendula, and sweet peas, as well as vegetables like parsley, spinach, and lettuce, are among the early spring harvests.
Tune-up Tools
If you didn’t properly store your tools for the winter, give them some care so they’re in good form when it’s time to work. Sharpening bypass pruners is beneficial. Cleaning, sanding, and massaging with linseed oil enhance wooden handles. Make a list of what’s lacking and order tools for the upcoming growing season.
Fertilize
Your garden is waking up, and it would enjoy some fuel. When new growth emerges, apply a balanced fertilizer (the numbers on the package should indicate 6-6-6 or 8-8-8) or fish emulsion around trees and bushes. Around acid-loving plants like azaleas, camellias, blueberries, and citrus, apply high-acid fertilizer and pine-needle mulch. When active growth returns, begin fertilizing perennials.
