The upcoming summer season will probably see the highest temperatures on record and of course, you should be concerned that your loved ones might suffer from dehydration. Lack of hydration in the body can lead to serious side effects, such as headache, dizziness, inability to concentrate, and even severe complications like seizures. As such, it is of extreme importance that your loved ones and stay hydrated as heat waves occur more frequently. Here are some summer hydration tips that might be of help to you.
Create a Daily Hydration Schedule
It’s crucial for your loved ones to stay hydrated as when they progress in years, the body’s natural ability to preserve water decreases and our thirst senses are no longer as precise. This means that when your loved ones may not even be aware that they are experiencing dehydration. To prevent this issue from arising, what your loved ones can do is to set a hydration schedule. It doesn’t have to be extremely regimented. They can draw out a simple planner on a post-it notes and paste it on the wall to remind themselves to drink water. We recommend drinking a glass of water immediately after waking up in the morning, after a meal, and after participating in both light and strenuous activities.
Eat More Water-Rich Fruits and Vegetables
At times, your loved ones may feel bloated after drinking many cups of water. In this case, they can substitute water with water-rich fruits and vegetables for their fluid needs. Some fruits and vegetables that contain high amounts of water include cucumber, watermelon, spinach, blackberries, tomatoes, and many more. Your loved ones can also search online or seek the help of professionals if they wish to know more about water-rich foods and how it can be part of a nutritious meal plan.
Consume Sports Drinks
While it is best to keep up with a steady exercise regime, you do not have to be physically active to drink sports drinks. Sports drinks, or otherwise called electrolyte drinks, contain electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and chloride to replace the body’s lost fluids. If your loved ones are facing symptoms of dehydration, they can turn to sports drinks for a quick remedy. However, we do not recommend consuming these beverages constantly as they also contain high levels of sugar, which can lead to obesity and diabetes.
Add Flavors to Water
Find that water tastes too bland? Well, we have a trick for you. Your loved ones can experiment with their water by incorporating ingredients such as mint, sliced fruits, and various herbs to inject some flavor. Some of our loved ones may even enjoy drinking coconut water, which is a natural beverage to restore hydration and refill the electrolytes in their bodies.
Stay Indoors
When the sun is shining and the weather is way too humid, your loved ones should simply stay indoors to keep their bodies cool. The sun tends to shine the brightest from 10 in the morning to two in the afternoon, so your loved ones should avoid heading out during this period. It will be good if your loved ones have an air-conditioner in their apartments. If not, it’s a worthy investment if they’re living in a warmer climate.
